Eating Well in Perimenopause: 5 Foods Worth Knowing
No food rebalances your hormones — but what you eat does matter at this stage, especially for your bones, heart and energy. These five are easy wins.
1. Ground flaxseed and soya
Both contain plant compounds called phytoestrogens. Research on them is mixed: some women find foods like soya and linseed a helpful part of their diet, others notice no difference. Either way they bring fibre and protein. Try a tablespoon of ground flaxseed on porridge or yoghurt.
2. Oily fish
Salmon, mackerel and sardines are rich in omega-3 fats, which support heart health — something that matters more after menopause. The NHS suggests two portions of fish a week, one of them oily.
3. Leafy greens and dairy (or fortified alternatives)
Kale, broccoli, milk, yoghurt and fortified plant milks provide calcium, which your bones need more than ever as oestrogen falls. Pair them with vitamin D — in the UK most adults are advised to consider a daily supplement in autumn and winter.
4. Beans, lentils and wholegrains
Fibre-rich foods keep you fuller for longer and help steady your energy through the day, which many women find useful when sleep is patchy.
5. Protein at every meal
Eggs, fish, beans, tofu, chicken or Greek yoghurt help you keep muscle strength, which naturally declines in midlife.
A note on water
Staying hydrated helps with dryness and tiredness, both common during this transition.
If you're thinking of changing your diet significantly, or taking supplements, it's worth a chat with your GP or a registered dietitian first.
